Statement from Rep. Ron Barber on Women’s Equality Day

August 26th, 2012

Today, Ron Barber released the following statement:

“Today we celebrate Women’s Equality Day and the tremendous achievements and contributions of women in this country. As a husband, father to two daughters, and grandfather to two granddaughters – soon to be three – I am grateful to the men and women who have come before us to fight for the advancement of equality for women and to those who continue to do so today. I am particularly proud of my wife Nancy and the work she has done for women in our community.

“The arc of our country’s history has been the expansion of rights and a march towards equality for all people, including America’s women. But we still have work to do. We must continue to protect the strides women have made in this country in the face of attempts to roll back the progress that has been made. That’s why I am a proud cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, why I continue to push for reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and why I believe steadfastly that we must protect a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions.

“Let’s make sure that today is a reminder of not only how far we’ve come, but also of how vigilant we must be in protecting the rights for women for which we have fought and advancing the rights that women deserve.”
